You may remember when we posted Cleveland's Best New Rock Bands Of 2009 back in December, we chose the CRBB as one of those bands and now they're performing at the ABC Tavern on West 25th this upcoming Thursday night [April 28 9pm]. This will be their first performance [outside of private & open mic nights] since their debut at the DoubtingThomas in 2009.

CRBB [facebook] has added a couple new members and has a show scheduled for the HouseOfBlues this upcoming summer so this will be your best shot to catch the band in a comfortable, non-corporate environment.

It has been two full months since the draft where 144 musicians were assigned to a group randomly to make up 33 bands. None of the particapants have ever performed with their new bandmates previous to the draft but all 33 bands will be performing this Saturday at the Beachland Ballroom. Specially priced Big Show MMX tickets are available at the Beachland, Visible Voice Books, Big Fun & online here for a measly 15 dollar prior to the day of the show [Saturday] where they will be priced at twenty bucks.

The Elks - 2010 Lottery League

The Lottery League posts here at the ClevelandSeen will be sporatic from here on out, one can still follow my updates of band practices complete with photos, video & mp3s, here [sissybar.blogspot.com].

I was chosen [via the letter L] in the *bonus* round of the 2010 Lottery League by band #27 now known as "The Elks". Our second practice was this past tuesday evening, this night consisted mostly of refining the two songs that were written during the first practice and creating a third ballet-type song.
It appears that the longest song is going to come in at the 3 minute range with the others being approximately half that length.

The video below has The Elks working on that 3rd song, keep in mind that any video/audio I post here are rough takes, the structure of these songs have changed from practice to practice [yes, both of them].

Our band consists of Nate Scheible [drums], Matt Jauch [guitar], Chris Rood [bass], Greg Miller [lead vocals] & me, Lou Muenz [visuals, theramocals, other].

"New Fez, New Suit" was the first song the band worked on and practiced together, Greg had the idea of the band being Pseudo-Elks as in the mens fraternal social club that meet up at gathering places called "Lodges". The video below is the latest rendition of the song, the Mp3 below that was the first practice rendition.

2010 Lottery League Draft

The 2010 version of the Lottery League Draft that took place last Friday night at the Beachland Ballroom went off nearly as flawless as the 2008 version that was held at Asterisk Gallery in Tremont. Most of the kinks were worked out beforehand and The Council of Chiefs learned some valuable lessons from LL2008.

Not unlike 2008, names were pulled out of a bingo-hopper with the first round reserved for drummers, half of those being drummers with practice spaces. The drummers without practice space would be paired with a musician from the second round that has a practice space. The next two rounds would be for the remaining musicians not yet picked.

One of the new changes in this year's LL2010 is that the fifth round would be a bonus round of sorts, a representative from 12 randomly picked bands chose a letter or number that spelled out LOTTERY LEAGUE 2010, each of those letters/numbers were assigned a "prize" or a bonus member that may or may not be a musician [I fell into this category/round]. Prizes included a Melt gift certificate, a Rock Hall package and four admissions to the Cleveland Zoo. Bonus members beside myself included Jae Kristoff [The Head Chief of Council], Tony Erba, PJ Doran, Matthew T & Nick Traenkner are a few that I remember.
Also new to this year's draft was a Lottery League Hall Of Fame commemoration that awarded certificates to those Lottery League bands that continued as bands after the 2008 season ended, those bands were: Anal Cheetahs, Mohammad Cartoon [both bands performed at this years draft], Gandhi SS, Stimulus Package & The Valley Of Life. Veteran LL participant and former Tremont Art Auctioneer Joe Milan did a great job as the emcee, I did not hear one complaint about mispronunciation from 150 or so names he called this night. Guest bingo-hopper operators included: Cindy Barber, Kathy Simkoff, Mark Leddy & the Beachland Lady cop. Next up for each band is finding a name and configuring a practice schedule.

Lottery League 2010

Lottery League was started back in 2008 and came from a concept Jae Kristoff created. Long story short: you gather 130+ local musicians together, throw their names into a bingo hopper and create 30+ new bands from the names picked from the hopper. No two people can be in a Lottery League band that performed together previously.
This year's version of Lottery League plans to be just as rewarding and large as the 2008 version but with quite a few new particapants as well as having the draft night open to the public at the Beachland Ballroom this friday night at 9pm.

I spent an iconceivable ammount of time in 2008 documenting nearly every aspect of Lottery League including sitting in on over 60 band practices of 29 of the 33 bands [a handful of bands made it nearly impossible to reach my goal of all 33 bands].
This year Jae has asked me to be part of the process by including myself in the roster of folks that will be in the draft and in a new LL band before the sun rises on saturday. With that said, it was an easy choice for the ClevelandSeen staff to chose me as their Lottery League correspondent.

Within a few days, I will be posting here with photos & video of the draft as well as the rosters of the newly formed bands. You can find the draft list of particapants on the Lottery League blog Jae started in 2008, that is here.

Daniel Higgs is mostly known for his leading role in the near-legendary band Lungfish. Higgs has been performing with a banjo in his solo stints as he will on this Sunday night.
Mark McGuire is the guitarist for the ubiquitous cleveland outfit known as the Emeralds.
Cloud Nothings will open the night with a Lo-Fi Garage set.

Roky Erickson At The Beachland, March 6

The Cleveland Seen was the first media outlet [in the world] to announce that Roky Erickson of '13 Floor Elevators' fame will be playing the Beachland Ballroom [Beachland's 30th Anniversary Weekend} on Saturday March 6th 2010. We announced this back in October because of two very good resources [our confidential 24/7 tip line is: 216.367.2175], both turned out to be 100% correct despite being without knowledge of the specific date.

Though not confirmed, Roky Erickson is expected to be performing with 'Okkervil River' as the backup band on this March night when they will be performing music from 'True Love Cast Out All Evil' that's due out on 'Anti' Records on April 20th and will be Erickson first album in 14 years.

Vic Chesnutt Final Show In Cleveland

I was fortunate enough to make it out to the Beachland Ballroom on June 27, 2009 to see Vic Chesnutt open up for Jonathan Richman. Little did I know that this would be the final time I would see Chesnutt.
Vic Chesnutt passed away on Christmas day after taking an overdose of muscle relaxers.

The last memory I have of Chesnutt is of him hanging out on the sidewalk outside the Beachland making small talk to anyone that would approach him.

Three weeks before his death Chesnutt gave an Interview with Terry Gross of NPR, below is a small part of that interview where Vic explains to Gross the thought process of "Flirted With You All My Life", a song off of his new album "At The Cut" that was recorded with Fugazi's Guy Picciotto and members of Thee Silver Mt. Zion.

GROSS: Vic, let's talk about the lyric. The song [Flirted With You All My Life] is about flirting with suicide, but from what I've read, you've done more than flirt with it. It's something you've tried.

Mr. CHESNUTT: Right. Well, this song is a love song. It's a suicide's breakup song with death. You know, I've attempted suicide three or four times. It didn't take. And this is really a breakup song with death. You know, it's talking about flirting with, you know, flirting - I had flirted with death my whole life, you know. Even as a young kid, I was sick and almost died a few times. And then suicide attempts - it's a kind of - you know, it's a breakup song.

There is something to be said for commitment, whether it be familial or theoretical - commitment seems to be the one detail missing from today's cultural landscape. Make no mistake, The Cleveland based punk band, THIS MOMENT IN BLACK HISTORY are committed. They are committed to the dialogue created in quartet-that space where it will be heavy, sacred - the future leaning back to grab the past. On their third full length, Public Square you can clearly see where this visionary "commitment" to a historical dialogue has taken their art.

Confused? its okay, that happens when you might have touch apathy "lens".
Forgive yourself and move on. Lets be clear here, you will not find a more emotionally charged record length statement than Public Square, the record starts in the tradition of forward jazz records - a sharp stab of keys, into Gospel tinged hum. You realize that it is time to pay attention, much like the World B. Free preamble on their last record, "It Takes A Nation of A**holes To Hold Us Back" - a call to arms has been made. You stand up, only to smack in the f-ing face with one of the sickest riffs recorded in the last fifteen years. Hyperbole? Perhaps, but you will be hard pressed to not agree. While the riff in the rock context often is meant to describe a guitar lick, this "RIFF" of Bim Thomas kick in immediate dialogue guitarist, Buddy Akita's dynamic stanza propels you right into vocalist Chris Kulcsar's compelling vocal. This a band of drummers in mind, simply because the rhythm created by the quartet is so Hank Shocklee.

And they know just how bad ass "FOREST WHITAKER (in an uncompromising role)" is for at the end of the song, you hear a distinct, and steady YEAH as they launch into a quintet "suite" (if you will) of some of the most compelling songs I have ever heard in a group context. Beginning with " THEOPHYLLINE VALENTIME" - the title a reference to Asthma- and ending with "90% TONE".

The second side continues to amaze, even as they break into a beatbox instrumental, complete with one of the most hilarious double entendre rhymes ever recorded. So tongue in cheek is that you begin to wonder after a couple of listens if he really is imploring the band to give his "NOTES" space. I think of this band in the context of sample artists like The Dust Brothers, or Madlib - conceptual in approach, but each side bringing their strong will to the proceedings. Not one member of THIS MOMENT seems to be giving ground. Its what makes them so masterful, and what makes you question what is wrong with a culture that is intent on turning its most brilliant artists into villain - for you know there are millions of people who believe what this band does. Your mind will not allow for you to let go of the fact that you and yours are being hidden from the masses, while the "big brother watching" give them shit dressed ala punk[e' ] , and piss bling[ed] as hip hop.

Recorded by Paul Maccarrone at the recently defunct - Zombie Proof Studios, and printed onto recycled colored vinyl, the music hits - i don't think they have ever been recorded better than this. Bim Thomas' drums sound as if they could swallow entire marching bands, and Lawrence Daniel Caswell's bass thump like a dozen 808s. Beat makers will be in heaven. I must say that it was Buddy Akita's playing on this particular record that i found awe inspiring.

Described by other reviewers/bloggers as blues and garage tinged - and while that holds weight - I found him to be playing both as an ensemble player, and a the exact same time floating over the entire record in an explosively subtle way. Much like Dolphy, in the context of Coltranes' now infamous quartet. It makes the title, PUBLIC SQUARE metaphor almost meta-textual in its satirical, but sincere homage to Cleveland, for while there must be communication from all sides to be a "square" the intent of any public space must be present. This where gather to give the news- here is where we rally for our own. Akita's guitar is this intent.

Terry Durst: The Carter Excavations

If you ever had the chance to meet Terry, the first thing that comes to mind is how affable the man is, no matter if you're at the Beachland Ballroom or in the alley fixing a flat tire, Terry will always make the situation brighter.
A wild imagination is another trait of Terry Durst and that is apparent in his preparation for "The Carter Excavations" exhibition that is opening this Friday the 8th of January at Arts Collinwood [6-9pm.]

Terry Durst summary of The Carter Excavations:
I cast myself as a fictional character, Zeke Carter, and dug up my family’s site in Alaska – this is where I found these pieces. The Carter Family – the original 3, Maybelle, Sara and Alvin – were excavated as well, in that the pieces are about how I feel when I hear them sing and play. Howard Carter discovered King Tut’s remains, and hopefully that piece of history exists throughout the work in a subliminal sense. I was thinking about Euclid Beach Park, my first experience at an amusement park when I was 5. truTV’s Forensic Files has been a major influence on this work.

Artist Statement:
I’ve made and observed art since my early teenage years, my biggest influence and obsession has been and continues to be Neil Young, and rock and roll in general. My favorite film in the entire world is David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE. (Yes, this title is in all caps.) This film has taught me how to work in my studio. I think it is Lynch’s masterwork. Dan Tranberg and I have been partners for 14 years. We have one dog, a young Basset Hound named Duke (after Ellington). My degree is from Kent State – split major, sculpture and film. I taught several subjects in the Art Department at Tri-C East for 5 years. At CIA, for 2 years, along with classes in the Painting Foundations program, I taught a class in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks TV series. I love students but find most Administrations crazy and evil, evil like the cult in Rosemary’s Baby. Currently I work at The Beachland Ballroom as a doorperson/bouncer, but will be bartending there very soon.

I believe Cleveland Tapes and the many hip-hop artists they represent has decided to forego the winter by releasing a plethora of sweet summer albums complete with mini-skirt donned beats.
The latest release by San Goodee aka Santorise Turner BIG BROTHER ALMIGHTEE is an example of the labels urgency to "Put up or ShutUp" which is evident on: LIVING FOR THE NOW "since tomorrow ain't promised our time's not long, i gotta get it, i'm livin' for the now.."

Xmas @ The Grog Shop w/The Chargers Street Gang

It has been several years that the CSG has been active as a band though the group does not want this Christmas show at the Grog to be labeled as a reunion show. My best guess for that reasoning is that reunion shows often are a let down with the band reuniting well pass their prime. One cannot accuse the Chargers with being past their prime at the end of 2009 with members still in their 20's & 30's. Much anticipation for this ununion from loyal fans as well as those that never had a chance to see the band live will certainly make this night a "must-see" for those that consider themselves as local music enthusiasts.

Opening for the Chargers this night are: Sun God, Founding Fathers & Self Destruct Button.

New Releases From Smog Veil Records

Smog Veil Records is a indie label that began in Cleveland in 1991 then relocated to Reno Nevada seven years later, in 2005 Smog Veil moved to its current location in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago. Their new building has solar panels, wind turbines, a rooftop garden and 15 60 foot deep wells that will supply geothermal/cooling. All this makes SVR one of the first record labels to be certified "green".

Smog Veil still represents many Cleveland bands including Pere Ubu, Rocket From The Tombs, Face Value, Amps2Eleven, etc. SVR has recently released a few excellent releases that I have listed below with details provided from the label.

Pere Ubu - Long Live Pere Ubu

All hail the survival of the UNfit! Brutal, lacking charm, no redeeming virtues -an album for our times.
This project, taken altogether, is a ridiculously ambitious effort. It started in the summer of 2007 as a series of songs to be inspired by Alfred Jarry's "Ubu Roi." One early goal was to approach the space between songs in a new way, using connective dialog and ambient noise as bridges, while remaining true to Jarry's anti-theatrical methods. This led directly to the notion of a live "radio play" that would unify the concert set. Easter Monkeys - CD / DVD Combo

It’s generally accepted amongst the Cleveland cognoscenti that Easter Monkeys were the best rock ‘n’ roll band calling the city home in the early to mid 1980’s. Rock ‘n’ roll in the sense of the Ghoulardi-inspired hybrid that Cleveland is known for. The band was fronted by ex-Kneecappers Chris Yarmock, bassist Charlie Ditteaux, with Jim Jones (Pere Ubu, Home and Garden, Mirrors) amazingly creepy guitar work and Linda Hudson’s basement beat. This release collects up the band’s lone LP, comp tracks, unreleased stuff and a DVD of a 1982 gig.

Frenemy Fail Of The Pittsburgh Waffle Shop

This past Friday the Front Room Gallery on Superior Avenue and the Waffle Shop in Pittsburgh both had a "Creative Comradery" collaboration of sorts titled "Frenemies".

FRENEMIES is a group exhibition featuring artists who are either from, reside in, or have ties to Cleveland and/or Pittsburgh. The title, a portmanteau of “friend” and “enemy,” eludes simultaneously to the age-old rivalry between these two cities (most often associated with football) and to the striking similarities between them. By bringing together artists who share common sensibilities, from playful and humorous to absurd and bizarre, we hope to highlight the shared experience and inspire creative comradery and collaboration between the two cities.. [Front Room]

I am not a fan of football and therefore I don't give a shit about the Browns or the Steelers but I understand the friend/enemy "comradery" between the two cities because of the close proximity and the many ex-Pittsburghers that inhabit Cleveland. Hell, Mayor Frank Jackson has proclaimed this "Brown and Orange Week" despite the home team having a 1-11 record!

The other day as I was roaming the internet's I came across a flyer that the Waffle Shop produced to promote the "Frenemies" event. The flyer consists of some decent graphic work with a map of the two cities in the background had a couple tin-cans connected by string as Grover Cleveland "spoke" to Andrew Carnegie in the foreground of the image [shown below]. I imagine the former President saying something like this: "Andrew, do have any idea why I am being associated with Cleveland Ohio?"

I realize art is not rocket science but I would hope that an adult would know the difference between a former President and Moses Cleaveland when depicting the founder of Cleveland in a advertisement of sorts. Hopefully this was not done by a Carnegie Mellon student. -FG

Cleveland's Best New Rock Bands Of 2009

Cleveland had quite a few very decent new bands that made their debut this year, more than any in recent memory aside from the Lottery League project that happened a couple years ago. Many of these groups were formed with members of other successful local bands, MegaChurch [Machine Go Boom, This Is Exploding], Founding Fathers [Roue, Tokyo Storm Warning, Reigning Sound], Buried Wires [Brian Straw, MGB, Aloha], Shiny Penney [Dreadful Yawns].
One or possibly two of these bands may have started at the end of 2008 but they didn't find their "full stride" until '09..

If you have a chance, get yourself out to a show one of these bands are performing and you won't be disappointed. I'm looking forward to upcoming releases that hopefully are coming as well as the maturation of their development in a year from now when the local scene paper will probably be finally taking notice.

Pat's In The Flats Thanksgiving Night With Coffinberry

This will be the fifth straight year that Coffinberry has hosted Pat's annual Thanksgiving show that was previously hosted by Viva Caramel until they broke up after the Thanksgiving 2004 show. We heard a rumor from a good source that Coffinberry were breaking up due to a member moving out of town, this would be a real loss if that is indeed true.

This is another real strong lineup that includes Brian Straws new band the Buried Wires that is a pure rock band that feels like they have been together a couple years though it was just this past October that they debuted at the Happy Dog.
Tinko consists of former members of Viva Caramel and will be opening the show. The Wooly Bullies are a high powered act that were once the Dimeras.

The city of Cleveland design review committee rejected a proposed new Nike design today that would replace the "We Are All Witnesses" mural located on a large building across the street from the Cavaliers home at the 'Q'.

Design review committee chairman Artis Blank said "The new mural does not reflect Cleveland in a positive manner and what average citizen needs that much weaponry?"

The sixth annual IngenuityFest will take place on Detroit / Superior bridge [Veterans Memorial], the locale of the very successful 2009 Bridge Project. The festival has also moved from a summer event to the last weekend in September [24th through the 26th.]
The 2010 IngenuityFest will apparently replace the Bridge Project as ingenuityfest.com digests clevelandbridgeproject.com .

Dan Gilbert Asks ODOT to Delay I-71 Innerbelt Bridge Plans

We have heard from a very good source today that Cleveland Cavalier owner and Casino backer/benefactor has asked the Ohio Department Of Transportation to put off plans for the proposed re-building of the I71 Innerbelt Bridge while his group explore locations in that area.

Issue 3 Casino vote was passed by a narrow margin on Tuesday and all four locations have vowed to have their casinos up and running within three years. -FG

Bob Peck Bio

Bob Peck is a local artist that has had quite of an interesting life in his 30 years in Cleveland, Peck currently has found his stride with abstract art. I've never been much of an abstract art connoisseur and even remember looking at it as a kid and thinking "I could do that!", though when I've seen the abstract work that Bob has been showing the last couple years the first thing that comes to mind is "WOW, I could never do that!". I seriously though of buying one of those pieces a couple months ago but then quickly realized his abstracts would be way too classy for my humble abode.

Bob started his love for art as a teenager and quickly became enamored with graffiti & aerosol art, the most excepting of the art world for a "outsider". I recently just read some rough draft excerpts of a bio that Bob has been working on and have placed those excerpts below.
Remember these are in the draft stage, I'm excited to read the final product that Bob has told me should be out soon. -LM

"This place was the meeting ground for every major gang in the city. Laotian Bloods, East Side Crips, Folks, Vicelords and every 'round the way street gang you could name all under one roof. Gang tags were scrawled around the outside of the building, students were crouched into outside corners smoking weed. Inside was no better, the main halls had riot gates that could be slammed shut by the school guards when the time called for it, which I'm guessing was quite often. Broken windows adorned the halls while mangled desks from classroom fights were propped up outside of dingy room doors."

***"The scary part was that I couldn't picture anything after the day I was living in though, I couldn't fathom what life would be like in the years down the road. Sometimes I even wondered if I would still be alive. The way my life was at this point I pictured myself being dead or in jail by eighteen."

**"I still had no graffiti name to tag or write so at first I just used my first name, “Bob”. Not a good idea, soon enough I had store owners chasing me down and yelling at me to stop writing my name on their properties at every corner."

***"The only class I really looked forward to in tenth grade was Art and I didn't even have it as a real class on my schedule. I had asked for Art the year before but it was full so I got Industrial Arts instead, which was a glorified name for wood shop. It wasn't bad but it wasn't art. So when tenth grade came along, I went right to the Principal and asked for art again. What did I get? Industrial Arts 2. I guess art class was full again this year. This was Kinda' feeling like when you'd ask for a cd player for Christmas and you'd end up with a cassette deck. Finally, I took it into my own hands and started skipping study hall and just showing up in Art class. Full? It wasn't full, there were plenty of seats so one day I walked in and I took one."

"I hit the Rapid station and waited patiently for the train to take me to the other side of town. The great part about this new daily commute was that I got to see almost every inch of the red line route every day. This meant I got to see all the graffiti that went up and I could keep current on what spots to go after. The train ride there was almost a half an hour of pure bliss for me. I ignored the half awake businessmen and burger flippers."

**"Even when the others weren't around I was going out almost every night on solo missions. I was determined to have my name up more than any other writer in the city. Soon enough though going out alone painting would almost cost me my life."

New Cleveland Band: Wifestriker

Wifestriker will make their debut this Tuesday November 3rd at Now That's Class opening for The Pygmy Shrews [Ex-Drunkdriver], This Moment In Black History and a band called 'Sports Bras' that I have no idea of what they're about except that they are from Cleveland and have been only around for a few months.

Dan Polito of Wifestriker describes his bands influences as Motown & Funk but with a much heavier edge to it, Wifestriker has former members of 'Six Parts Seven' including Jay Karpinski in the band. There is zero information on the internet's of Wifestriker outside of this post that I procured after a couple conversations with Dan.

HOAG has been added to this show, late Monday afternoon.

Devil's Night - October 30, 2009

Halloween at Pat's In The Flat's is near legendary with the outrageously fun shows they had there in the last several years.
I'll let Jae explain this years gig with a direct quote below.

End of 1990's the last Washout Corp. lineup went in separate ways Davis forming the Franchise,Mike recording songs under the name "Mikey Machine" .Jae and Rich forming what was at that time a 4track noise project Self Destruct Button. Mikey would eventually put together a lineup of friends to perform the songs he'd write and called it Machine Go Boom! and on 8/9/2002 MGB and SDB would each perform their first show together at the Mantis in Kent in front of nobody. dispite completly different sounds these bands would go on to play a lot of shows together. In 2004 the bands put out a split EP . At this point MGB would begine playing Halloween at Pat's in the Flats often the busiest show of the year for Pat. this past year MGB broke up.So this leaves SDB with no choice but to save Halloween.MGB would have wanted the show to go on. FREE w/costume 9pm pats friday.

Coffinberry New 12 Inch

The Lakewood border band known as Coffinberry has a new album [self-titled] coming out on Collectible Escalators and will be released on 12" vinyl that will complete their troika after their last two releases were on CD & cassette only, respectably.
That album is not available yet but Coffinberry has it streaming on their website and from what I've heard after a couple listens, I really like. The album incorporates more acoustics and vocal harmonies and that is probably the largest difference from their previous efforts though the fine songwriting remains as Tony's vocals matures farther than anything I've heard from Coffinberry in the past. One way or another, do yourself a favor and listen to this album.

Coffinberry will be performing Thanksgiving Night with Buried Wires, Tinko & Wolly Bollie at Pat's In The Flats.

Inside Out & Martin Papcun

Martin Papcun came to Cleveland from his home in Prague, Czech Republic for a residency at Spaces Gallery in October 2008, during that time Papcun deconstructed a foreclosed home on West 45th. that entailed removing exterior walls of the home revealing the upstairs living area and commode.

Papcun has a similar project that will be revealed this Tuesday October 27th. from 4pm till 9pm. This abandoned home is located on 3601 Siam Avenue and is also in Ohio City just blocks from Papcun's previous west side project.
When I spoke to Papcun last Saturday night I asked him if he and his small crew were involved in the clearing of the litter left behind from the previous family that lived there before they were kicked out as the foreclosure procedures were enforced and Martin explained that they were part of that process and they had to hire exterminators to remove the mass of fleas that were feasting on them when they attempted to remove the carpet.

Martin has greatly improved his confidence of the English language since I first met him almost a year ago when he would only reply to my queries with a couple word answers. Saturday, Martin explained to me that he and his small crew have only about 12 daylight hours remaining till the opening and he is worried about finishing the project by then but has confidence in the fine locals that are working with him.

Papcun's ambitious eight-week goal was not only to create an exhibition of
work in the gallery at SPACES' that addressed the foreclosure crisis,
but to physically dissect a foreclosed home. Cleveland has thousands
of homes whose windows and doors are shuttered with plywood to keep out
intruders who would pillage their copper or squat in their rooms.
The gallery component of Papcun's work organized toy homes, barns and
stores from thrift-stores (even children are abandoning their toy dwell-ings).
These miniature structures formed a ghostly street where windows
and doors were boarded up with balsa wood.

PinkEye #6 Is Online

It has just been a little over a year since Ian and Leigh produced the first PinkEye [August of 2008] in its semi-glossy print state that was filled with some awesome artwork and interesting articles of the area art & music scene. Six strong issues later the PinkEye is still publishing their zine but with the skyrocketing cost of printing has forced them to temporarily end the print issue and become available only online.

Hopefully the PinkEye Magazine will be able to find an affordable printer in the near future though the online version features the same great look, articles & reviews and that can be viewed here.
[Edit- Oct. 26, 2009: Ian told me Saturday night that they hope to have a limited run of printed issues within the next couple weeks.]

Cleveland Matinee Now Cranky's

We were the first outlet to report that the CM has subleased the club to Dizi a couple weeks back and we were also the first to report that they have changed their name to Cranky's, apparently referring to bicycles with Dizi being a former bike messenger.
The club still plans to have bands but I believe on a limited basis. Cranky's at the moment has zero web-presence but what I gleamed from Diz was that weeknights would have a theme, Mondays are bike nights with cheap beer prices, Tuesdays are trivia night, Wednesdays are 80's nights w/ "80's drinks @ 80's prices" [whatever that means].
